A type of machine which is specifically used to load and unload heavy, large freight containers is known as a container forklift. They are utilized to shuttle freight off and on ships, truck beds and trains. Container forklifts are the largest and most sturdy kinds of forklifts made. They need to be extremely maneuverable on terrain which is uneven and have enough power and torque to safely raise bulky containers. Normally, they have big pneumatic tires and heavy-duty diesel engines.
Like all kinds of forklifts, a container forklift uses forks in order to lift the containers. Forks have to be positioned to make sure the load is secure during transport. Several container forklift models are just meant to raise the containers a few meters off the ground. Other container handlers utilize another method for lifting containers to greater heights. A container handler utilizes a device attached to the front of the vehicle to clamp down on either end of the container like jaws. The machinery is counterbalanced with weights to maintain stability.
The main purpose of a container forklift is to lift and transfer containers. Regular forklifts do not have enough reach for working in ports. The forks are rated based on the most weight they can handle. The forklift's capabilities must be posted prominently in the cockpit and should never be exceeded.
