The forklift is a material handling device used to raise and transport loads from one place to another. Each component of a forklift has a specific function. Various parts could be used to transport the load horizontally or vertically.

Mast
The forklift mast refers to all the components which lower and lift the load. There are different types of masts for lifting loads to different heights: triplex, quad, simplex and duplex.

Power Supply
Forklifts have four various ways of being powered: electric, gas, diesel and propane. The battery is situated within the cab under the seat. The propane tank is on the rear of the truck. The fuel tank on diesel and gas forklifts is underneath the back of the truck.

Cab
The forklift cab is located in the middle of the truck. This is where the operator sits and accesses all the controls and informational gauges. The steering wheel, gas pedal, brake, lifting controls and tilting controls are all located in the cab.

Frame
The frame of the truck carries all the largest parts of the forklift, like the counterweights, that are located at the rear to prevent the truck from tipping when loaded. The frame includes the overhead guard which protects the operator. The undercarriage holds the axles, wheels and driveshaft.
