Classifications of Aerial Lift Platforms & Scissor Lifts
Scissor lifts are made of a series of crisscrossed steel arms, linked up to create an X pattern. When the crisscrossed arms are extended, the platform is raised vertically. There are support railings along the edges of the lifting mechanism to be able to keep the employees safe and help to secure their tools.
The scissor lift has a low profile, best used for smooth surfaces like hard dirt surfaces, concrete and pavement. These equipment utilize either an electric motor or a combustion engine in order to move the lift and power the lifting apparatus. The operator will have to move the lift itself if he or she has to travel horizontally, as the lift apparatus only operates the lift vertically.
Rough Terrain Scissor Lift
The rough terrain scissor lift and the standard scissor lift utilize the same lifting technology. The key difference is that the rough terrain models feature a different base that is specifically made for surfaces which are uneven. These units also provide higher ground clearance and oversized all terrain tires. The rough terrain scissor lifts utilize 4-wheel drive so as to navigate through difficult and muddy terrain without problems.
Telescopic Boom Lift
The telescopic boom lift uses a telescoping beam which raises both vertically and diagonally. This model has a small work platform which houses controls in order to operate the boom. The controls function with a combustion engine so as to power the hydraulics which move the lift and power the boom. The telescopic boom lift has off-road capable tires and is an independent lift unit.
Articulating Boom Lift
The articulating boom lift features 2 telescopic booms that are connected with a moving elbow mechanism. This lifting equipment has a bucket or a small work platform which is equipped with hand controls in order to control the boom. These are stand-alone lifts which are powered by a combustion engine. Articulating boom lifts are available with either hard surface or off-road tires. These lifts are made in order to reach on top of and over top of buildings.
Aerial Mast Lift
The aerial mast lift uses a telescopic mast in order to lift a work platform vertically into the air. Usually, these lifts are pneumatic powered or electrically powered and are self-propelled machinery. These equipment provide a great solution for working in high racks in narrow warehouse aisles. It is vital to remember that aerial mast lifts are not recommended for off-road application and are limited to vertical movement.
