Forklifts or lift trucks are powered industrial trucks which are typically utilized in the moving and lifting of materials for different operations. These equipment are usually used in the construction, mining, dockside and warehousing operations.

The forklift could be called by a lot of different names, depending on their functions. A few different examples of these names are: trailer loaders, fork trucks, lift trucks and stacker trucks. These machinery are utilized throughout the globe, mainly within the manufacturing and warehousing industry.

The first forklifts made their debut in the mid 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, when they were utilized as part of the construction of the 1906 Pennsylvania railroad. At that time, platform trucks were launched in order to help in moving products. These very first platform trucks run on batteries. The trucks regained their popularity during WWI when extreme labor shortages occurred because of all the enlisted men. This is when forklifts truly arrived on the market to stay.

For forklifts, there are basically 2 types: ones that handle light cargo and the ones that deal with heavier loads. Lighter units will consist of: towing tractors, side loaders, walkie starters and hand pallet trucks. These machinery are made for handling lighter cargo and they are not suitable for very heavy loads. The specific load capacity of the equipment is posted in the owner's handbook and on the machine itself. Some examples of the big truck types include: walkie order picking trucks, truck mounted forklifts and telescopic handlers.

On the market today, there are many units of forklifts available. Each could provide various load capacities. Most of the time in warehouse applications, the lighter models is used. Bigger units are usually seen within the shipping industry. Some units have a tilting mast to make the load capable of bending in order to counteract any slipping.

The majority of forklift units with have rear steering wheels since this particular design aspect helps to increase the maneuverability of the machine. Moreover, this steering manner comes in very handy when operating around corners. These machines could be unstable due to their changing centers of gravity. It is a really good idea to avoid negotiating sharp corners.

Specialized forklifts are yet another kind. These equipment include articulated counterbalance trucks and explosion proof trucks. The explosion proof trucks are used in environments and factories that handle flammable supplies.
