Gresham top


The city of Gresham, Oregon is the states fourth largest city, at practically 105,000 residents. The city of Gresham is situated in Multnomah County east of Portland.

The community was first known as a campground for pioneers who were heading out towards the Willamette Valley and Portland. The city was not able to receive its status until it first established a postal code and post office. A local business man offered his store as a post office and suggested that the city be named after Postmaster General Walter Quinton Gresham, who was likewise an American Civil War general. The post office was established during the year 1884, and during the year 1905 Gresham was incorporated as a city with Lewis Shattuck as its very first mayor.

Gresham people believe that art is an important and inspirational part of whichever successful community. The city has attracted lots of artists and grown a vibrant local arts scene. A focal point of cultural activity is City Hall, with regular public art exhibitions. The local government supports the city's artists by acquiring art from local artists and providing gallery space.

The Gresham Art Walk, held each year within the city, features nearly 100 artists from throughout southwest Washington and Oregon. The tourists come from all over to enjoy the live music while being able to meet many of the artists. They also come to browse the locally produced pottery, paintings, photography, beadwork, glass work and textiles. Gresham's downtown has numerous one-of-a-kind farmers markets and boutiques. At Gresham Station shoppers have access to 50 nationally recognized restaurants and shops.

Gresham area outdoor activities include the scenic Columbia River Gorge and Mt. Hood National Forest. The Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area is a 130 km passageway that formed during the Missoula floods approximately 13,000 to 15,000 years ago. Outdoor fanatics could enjoy the following activities at the Gorge: camping, swimming, fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing, birding, photography, boating, picnicking, rock climbing, windsurfing and mountain biking.
